Choosing the Right Product
There are many products on the market designed to prevent or treat internal and external parasites. Choosing the right one for your pet can be difficult, but our team is here to help.
First, we need to identify which parasites are most important to prevent. Some products deter only fleas, others prevent internal parasites, and a select few products prevent both. Special considerations are needed when ticks are a concern, or in the treatment of tapeworms.
Secondly, we must decide on the optimal route of administration. Some pets will accept a flavoured chew or tablet, while others require a topical liquid applied onto the skin. We take these preferences into account when choosing the appropriate antiparasitic medication for your pet.
Fleas and Parasites
Our most recommended broad spectrum antiparasitics for both internal and external parasites are Advantage Multi, Revolution, and Sentinel.
Advantage Multi is a topical liquid that comes in pre-dosed tubes applied onto the skin once monthly. In cats it protects against adult fleas, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and ear mites. Dogs must be at least 7 weeks old and over 3 pounds, cats must be 9 weeks and 2 pounds.
Revolution is a topical liquid that comes in pre-dosed tubes applied onto the skin once monthly. In dogs, Revolution protects against adult fleas, flea larva, fleas, heartworm, roundworm, sarcoptic mange, ear mites, and 2 species of ticks. In cats it protects against adult fleas, flea larva, heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and ear mites.
Sentinel is an oral tablet given once monthly with a meal. For dogs only, Sentinel protects against flea eggs, flea larva, heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, and roundworm. Puppies must be over 2 weeks old, and weigh more than 1 kilogram. In the case of a flea infestation, a dose of Capstar should be given concurrently to kill the existing adult fleas.
Products that prevent only fleas include Advantage, and Program.
Advantage (different than Advantage Multi) is a once monthly liquid applied onto the skin, and comes in both dog and cat formulations.
Program is specifically for cats, and comes in either a monthly oral liquid, or as an injection given every 6 months.
Monthly deworming products available include Dolpac, Profender, and Milbemax.
Dolpac combines the benefits of three active ingredients to offer broad spectrum protection against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms in dogs and puppies two months of age or greater.
Profender is a once monthly topical solution for the treatment and control of hookworm, roundworm and tapeworm infections in cats and kittens that are at least 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 2.2 lbs. (1 kg).
Milbemax is a once monthly beef flavoured tablet for cats. Two active ingredients work in the treatment of internal parasites including roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm, in cats over 0.5kg and 6 weeks of age.
